Surrendering to God even when it doesn’t make sense to do so is an important lesson we all have to learn in life. And this is our life lesson for today. We will look at the life of a young virgin girl, Mary in the Christmas story, and see how she surrenders to the will of God when it just doesn’t make sense.

Let’s read and find out what happens. Mary is a young virgin girl, betrothed to Joseph. The angel Gabriel appears to her and delivers the following message, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!” (See Luke 1:28, NKJV.) This is quite the situation, she is being visited by an angel who just greeted her with the most perplexing salutation. As we will read on in this supernatural encounter she really is a humble young woman, and probably didn’t see herself before as being highly favored or blessed among women. Gabriel continues on with his angelic purpose. He then declares to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JesusHe will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end.”, Luke 1: 30-33.

What a frightful message to receive, and in the natural it doesn’t make any sense. She has never had sexual relations before, therefore she can not be expectant with child. And she even questions the angelic-being standing in front of her and responds with these words in verse 34, “How can this be, since I do not know a man?” And Gabriel explains to her how it will be in verse 35, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.” And knowing what she is about to encounter from others in her life, he gives her a prophetic word about her cousin, Elizabeth, and then a promise. He says, Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. For with God nothing will be impossible.” What a powerful message this young virgin girl, Mary receives.

In the natural this message of the Lord is inconceivable to understand, and it will take sheer trust and faith to receive. And she so beautifully accepts the will of the Lord for her life–even though it doesn’t make sense in the natural. Let’s remind ourselves of her humble response, “Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to Your word.”, see Luke 1:38, NKJV.

We are all facing a world that is filled with chaos and uncertainty and we, like Mary have a decision to make–we can deny our destiny, or we can surrender to His will for our lives even when it doesn’t make sense to do so. Let’s pray.

“Father God,

We are facing great uncertainties in life, but we want to do the right thing and be pleasing in Your sight. We confess that Your ways do not always make sense to us, but we know in our hearts that You have a plan and a purpose for us to follow. And we remind ourselves that You have even given to us a spiritual map–Your Holy Word, and a personal spiritual guide–Your Holy Spirit, Who leads us and guides us into all truth. So now, with humble hearts we surrender and trust You and Your ways for the days that are ahead of us. We accept Your plans and purposes, and we will do as You instruct us, even if people lie about us, or mistreat us for doing so we earnestly say, “Let it be to us according to Your word.”

In Your most precious name, we pray, amen.”

  1. Thank you So much for this wonderful reminder of how a young Mary surrendered so beautifully to the will of God for her life. Mary’s decision would benefit all mankind forever. I would like to share this word with ladies in my Bible study group if you don’t mind. Thank you again.

  2. Thanks so much Becky. Really needed to read this true word. My daughter Kate has been fighting a rare blood cancer. I am speaking with faith to the mountain and she hss been cleansing her heart of anger and disappointments too. Have you a specific prayer for her? Thanks

    1. In the name of Jesus’ I renounce a spirit of death and cancer in the blood. I release the healing power of Holy Spirit to flow through her every cell, tissue, organ and system and to cleanse them from the seed of cancer, and cancerous tumors, and that her blood is healed, strengthened and made whole for the glory of the Lord, amen and amen.

  3. Please pray for me. I need peace. I need to receive the Holy Spirit and a new completly life. I want to have a relationship not only with God with a real person that love me in the earth. Also, pray for my son and daughter.

    1. Dear Ivonne,
In the name of Jesus’ I pray for an inner healing to take place in your mind and emotions. I pray that you will make right decisions, open up your Bible and begin a journey to true love with the Lord, and that He will become your first love. And as you heal and become strong in the Lord that you will find His will for your life. I pray for an inner healing for your children’s mind and emotions and that they too will heal from an orphan spirit and accept God as their real Father, and be free in His love. In Jesus’ name, amen.
